What kind of home theater do you need?

  • Dedicated theater room: a room built for movies, usually with a projector or large display, tiered seating, wall wiring, and sound treatment.
  • Media room: a shared family or game room with a big screen and in-wall or in-ceiling speakers.
  • Simple upgrade: a new TV or soundbar, wall mounting, and cleaner cabling. Many installers handle this for a few hundred dollars.

How to choose a Houston installer

  • Ask if they are licensed and insured.
  • Ask to see photos of past work and for references.
  • Get a written, itemized quote that separates equipment from labor.
  • Ask about warranties on parts and labor.
  • Ask which brands they sell and support, and whether they will work with your builder or designer.

Houston home theater FAQs

Do I need a permit for a home theater?

Mounting a TV or adding speakers usually does not need one. New electrical work or changes to walls may. Ask your installer, as The Builder Market also advises.

How long does an installation take?

A simple mount and soundbar can take a few hours. In-wall wiring and projector rooms can take several days, and high-end projects can run one to two weeks or longer.

Should I wire during construction?

If you are building, yes. Ask your builder about pre-wiring before the drywall goes up. Running cable through finished walls costs more.
